How many of us have sung “Amazing Grace” over the years and not paid attention to the lyrics. I can vividly remember singing this song a few weeks after I gave my life to Christ and it was almost like I heard it for the first time. Suddenly the lyrics became so meaningful to me. I realized that this grace that the composer wrote about was the story of my salvation.
While all of the verses hold a powerful message, it’s the second verse that I want to draw your attention to.
“Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed.”
If it were not for God’s grace I would not have received Him. It was His grace that helped me fear a life without Him. This grace revealed to me my lost condition and I knew I needed God not as a crutch, but as a redeemer. I could not go another hour without him.
This is the problem with most people today, they don’t think that they need God. It’s like they see a Christian’s faith and trust in God as a weakness of sorts. However, there is strength in choosing a life with God and it is only by grace that you will find it. Weakness or incapacitating fear is not that the mark of the Christian, but rather it’s a courageous confidence in God.
Where are you in your faith today? Are you still trying to live without God? Is today your day to turn to Him?
